Next Time

The next time I see you
it will be different.
I will place my hands around your face
kiss you even before I say hello that
will be hello and an invitation
to everything we didn't do
the first time around.
All the things we didn't say
and didn't feel quite yet
that now feel like too much and
too far away too good to be true
and maybe not even real

I never meant to
wait for you it just
happened that way and by
waiting for you I
mean in my heart because I
must confess that my body
has betrayed you on occasion
but I prefer to think that
without a promise there is no betrayal.

But I know
that not all promises are made
out loud or just with mouths
some happen quietly and go
unnoticed until later
when your heart leaps up
with an answer to a question
you hadn't noticed being asked.

The next time I see you,
I will tell you that if there is something
you'd like to say
write a letter mail it tomorrow
or call leave a voice mail tomorrow
but today, today is too short for talking
And your mouth has other jobs to do
right now I'd like only
To feel your lips between my shoulder blades
Hear the tiny noises of the mattress
Smell the remnants of mint on your breath
And touch you everywhere everywhere

There is nothing for you to
Say only for you to do your eyes
Your hands your legs have important
Work and cannot be distracted
By too much thought or conversation
Tomorrow tomorrow it can all wait
Until tomorrow all the thinking
And wondering if this is right
Or wrong there is so much time
For that but this proximity
this privacy will be short-lived
The only thing I'd like to hear
From you is Oh God in about
Twenty minutes and 8 hours after
That Hello room service I'd like coffee
With cream, two poached eggs, bacon
And hashbrowns but until then
Come closer and remember Id like to be
On top.
The next time I see you.
