the driving to work in the morning poem

i drove into the rainclouds
with the sun at my back
smiled and admired my
mascara and the outer iris
of my right eye in the rearview mirror
waved at the interchange window washers
while i smoked a cigarette
that made my mouth taste like ass
and sang a duet with belinda carlisle
who can't harmonize with me
for shit
