Travel Log: Los Angeles, Day 1, Part 2

I met the most awesome guy - I started chatting briefly with the guy in the next seat about who lucky we are to have an empty seat between us on such a full flight. We asked each other the standard, "So, what brings you to LA?" question and it turns out he's on his way to California for an acupuncture class - he's been going about once a month for the past 7 months.

We talked a lot about acupuncture and I learned that I have most likely been getting TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) acupuncture - as opposed to 5 Elements acupuncture, which he's studying. Super interesting stuff.

Then it turns out he's a psychiatrist AND he works at an Ayurvedic center. In Iowa. Huh? An Ayurvedic center in Iowa?! I guess in Fairfield, where he lives, there's a place called the Maharishi University of Management, so the town's pretty down with the scene. Plus, his kids went to a place called the Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment where all the kids meditate with their teachers before the school day begins. Could this get any better?!

Yes. This guy has written a book on Ayurveda. He checked my pulse, and tells me I'm a Pitta/Kapha. I'm supposed to avoid sour and salty foods. Radical! My faith in humanity is restored. I love having unexpectedly cool conversations.

Ayurveda is SCARY. sure the massage and accupuncture sounds good - but that comes after the cleansing spices that make you poop or puke for an hour.

ugh.
