The Thyroid Update:

- I had a blood test a while ago to check my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level. It's 7.55, which is above normal, but not by a huge amount.

- I had an ultrasound on my thyroid last week, which revealed that I have small nodules that are about 6mm in size. They only biopsy these nodules if they are 1cm or larger, so mine are too small.

- Even though I have nodules and they can, theoretically, be cancerous, it is not likely that I have cancer. What is likely, and what my doctor has diagnosed, is that I have Hashimoto's syndrome (which at first I thought means I have a hunchback and will have to move to Paris, but turns out that's not the case). It causes hypothyroidism, which is what I have.

- My doctor gave me a low-level prescription for thyroid hormone replacement. In 3 months, I get another blood test to see if my TSH level is normal, and in 6 months I get another ultrasound to check on the nodules. If they are shrinking or staying the same size, that is good. If they are growing, that is bad.

All in all, it feels like nothing to worry about. The likelihood that I have cancer, or that this will turn into cancer is very, very low. And even if it is, thyroid cancer is a very slow-growing and treatable form of cancer. I have fairly mild and asymptomatic hypothyroidism, so it's nothing to worry about.

What is more worrisome to me is that Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life only got 26% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not like I really care. I'm still dragging Jeremy, Jack & Bill to see it with me tonight. Suckas.

I am happy that it is not likely to be cancer. Ya! I'm sad that you may have Hastimoto's syndrome, but, hopefully, you will do well with hormone replacement.

I like that my disorder sounds vaguely Asian. Makes me feel exotic!

TR:CoL can't possibly be as bad as T3 or The Hulk were.

In light of this new evidence, I am now giving you the title of "honorary asian". I'll bring you to the next meeting...we have much to discuss, little grasshopper.

Good to hear you are okay Meggie.
I hear trips to DC to visit really tall (funny) girls helps to cure just about anything. Might have to give it a try.

you'll be ok!

Speaking of Asian disorders, I'm in Thailand where the lowest grade tobacco is Marlboro extra-tar so I'm sure that I'll return with a fraction of the lung capacity I left with.

Glad to hear that this is nothing too serious.

My son was just diagnosed and also a type 1 diabetic is there any info you can give me?
