Downs and Ups

Thanks to everyone for the kind words regarding my aunt's death. It's not that we were close; events like that just make you think about mortality: both your own, and that of those you love.

Last night I was reading Book the Second in A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, and I came across this quote which I thought was quite wonderful:

"We all know that our time in this world is limited, and that eventually all of us wil end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up. And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. It is like walking up the stairs to your bedroom in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair than there is. Your foot falls down, through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try and readjust the way you thought of things."

In happier news, nothing feels quite as good as real mail in your real mailbox. Today I got two things, and they weren't even Christmas cards! I got a thank you note from Mopsa for being such a good New Year's date (yeah, baby!), and a postcard from Buddha in Florida! Friends are good.

My book club meeting was tonight. I was the only one who finished the book, and we didn't even talk about it. We agreed to read A Prayer for Owen Meany for next month, but I'm going to get snippy if we don't discuss the damn book. Jigga, please! I got things to do.
